William A. Cerny, Sr.

William A. Cerny, Sr., 91, lifelong Chicago resident, passed away peacefully the morning of Thursday, December 26, 2024. Born September 15, 1933, to the late John W. Cerny and the late Ella Cerny, William’s life was a testament to love, laughter, and faith. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry from DePaul University, William embarked on a successful career that was balanced with an abundant personal life. He met the love of his life, Theresa H. Cerny (nee Motsch), while ballroom dancing, a shared passion that would spin their lives together in harmonious rhythm for over 65 years until her passing in 2022. William was a loving father to William A. Cerny, Jr. (Patty), Katherine (Patrick) Michaels, Mary Beth (Ronald) Stillmaker, Lisa (Daniel) Clark, and Julie (Dave) Marubio; a cherished grandfather of seven; a doting great-grandfather of six; a dear uncle to many nieces and nephews; and caring brother to four siblings. In addition to his family, William’s faith was a cornerstone of his life. For over two decades, he served as a lector at St. Sylvester Catholic Church, sharing the scriptures with a resonant voice and a reverent heart. His love for God was as evident in his daily actions as it was in his dedicated service to the church. William's zest for life was expressed through his various interests and hobbies. He had an enduring affection for musicals, was an avid swimmer, an enthusiastic pinochle player, and lover of all things floral. Family gatherings at Fish Lake, IL, were among William’s most cherished moments. His lifelong friends, with whom he celebrated Halloween and New Year's Eve consistently, were an extension of his family, sharing moments of joy and creating memories that would last a lifetime. A devoted fan of both the Bears and Cubs, William’s loyalty to his teams was as steadfast as his commitment to his family and friends. For 60 years, he played Santa, bringing happiness and wonder to the hearts of children and adults alike, embodying the spirit of giving and joy.
