Dr. Owen Hugh Callaghan

Dr. Owen Hugh Callaghan, age 91, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 surrounded by family. He is survived by his daughters Colleen Callaghan Loftus and Maureen Callaghan Fryman, and his grandchildren Fiona Nicole Fryman, Sabrina Sage Fryman, James Owen Loftus, Megan Carol Loftus, and Dylan Frasier Loftus. He was married to the late Carol Turner. Dr. Owen H. Callaghan earned a Master of Science from the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg in 1956, and a PhD from the University of Sheffield, England. An immigrant from South Africa, Dr. Callaghan received an appointment to Chicago Medical School faculty in 1960 and played an active role during the transformation of CMS in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s when it became a full-fledged university with Master and PhD programs in Biochemistry. He was one of the first chairmen of the CMS Academic Assembly and participated in the leadership of various other university committees, such as his long-term role as chair of the Students Admissions Committee. Dr. Callaghan was a beloved teacher, and is known for his well-attended and greatly appreciated lectures on nutrition, lipids and protein biochemistry. He connected with students in a very warm, positive way and was always willing to go the extra mile to help them. He received the honor of Professor Emeritus in 1990 when he retired in recognition for his contributions to scientific literature and rigorously fulfilling obligations as a faculty member. After his retirement, he maintained a love of travel, classical music, poetry, global affairs, and beyond. He will be dearly missed by many family and friends.
